Just picked this jeep up last week. What I do know about it is it's a 67' CJ5, 225 V6, four speed. The guy I bought it from said it needed some work done on the rear. I just got around to taking off the diff cover to peek around a little. What I found is a little puzzling to me. I looks like the bolts that hold the powr lok? together are all sheard off or have all backed out some how. They are hitting the bearing cap. I plan on some light trail riding. I am looking for opinions on what may have happened, what needs to happen, and whether or not I should have listened to my wife and left this bad boy alone.

The PO either used the wrong sized bolts (too long) or they have backed out. From what I can see, the gear wear looks good and the gears are not bottomed out, so, the bearings have not dropped down. Did they change the gear ratio? I would also pull the front cover and see if you have the same gears. I have seen it where the PO has changed just the back gears for freeway driving.
Now, the big question...Do you know how to pull out the rear end?
Don't fee so bad, my rear end gears from a PO were busted teeth in the bottom of the case when I got it.

the case halve bolts have loosened up and backed out...over a period of time
the good news is I don't see any gear/teeth damage from the pics
the bad news is you need to pull it out, and check all components for damage, chipped teeth, even the case halves, to make sure they are not cracked/broken.
There would have been a lot of metal shavings circulated in the diff oil as the bolt heads wore down on the diff bearing cap; that is not good in the oil; probably means all the bearings should be replaced at the minimum.
you could get into more depending on what/any damage you might find.
this is a somewhat common occurance with powerlocs, if the diffs aren't serviced regularly which is when the bolts should be checked for tightness.

What kind of 4 speed, t18's were very rare behind Dauntless motors from the factory. Ask nickmil about the powerlock. He's the resident expert about these things.

Nice Jeep. Don't get too worried. It may not be that big of a deal. If yo pull the carrier out yourself it's usefull to know this: The bearing caps have to go back on the same side they came off of and in the same position as far as top and bottom. Mark them, somehow. I used a punch. You can usually pry the carrier out with a couple of medium sized prybars. It probably won't just fall out, but it could. Be ready to grab about 30 lbs when it comes out. The you can either tighten the bolts to spec, cross your fingers and put it back in or take it to a driveline shop and have them look at it. Powerloks are great differentials and it looks like you got a nice Jeep. I think you probably got a good deal.

X2 on all of this. Also, never listen to the wife when it comes to Jeeps.

I would be concerned about the bolt heads gouging the bearing cap and axle housing. If it's worn too much you might have to replace the axle housing. Remove the ring gear/powerlok and take a pic of any damage and post that for eval. From the first pic it looks worn pretty bad(note the radius of the cap and how much metal is left versus the side that not worn, bearing cap bolt heads looks worn too). Someone here might have an D44 housing available. Keep the jeep.

Welcome from Colorado.... very nice looking jeep! I know nothing about power locks so I can't help you there! Wives can get jealous of Jeeps cause they compete for your time... especially early on. Keep the Jeep, but don't neglect the wife! She'll learn to appreciate it when she gets to drive it too!:)

No, no, no! If you let the wife drive it, she will take it away from you. Of course this could cause the option of having to buy another Jeep for you so it might be a good thing. However, this may be why I have about five Jeeps now and don't have a wife anymore.:) :)
