Rear Gas Tank in 72 CJ5, skid plate?

    I am trying to put my 72 CJ5 back to a stock rear tank setup. The previous owner put a under seat style tank in but it looks like there was wiring, etc. for a rear tank setup initially. From my on-line research it seems that I need a skid plate for the gas tank to be mounted on. Does anyone have one of these skids laying around or some advice on a different approach for the rear tank?

    I don't think that you need a skid plate. If the 72 is the same as a 74 there are 3 s shaped steel brackets that attach the tank to the frame. 1 on each rear corner and one in the middle of the front of the tank. The skid mounts to the frame separately. Not required but I would not want to drive without a skid plate. Then it would be the Jeep Pinto.

    :iagree: The '71 is the same set up, so it's a safe bet the 72 is as well.
    Finding that skid will be difficult; I don't think repros are made. You'll have to find a good used one.

    Repro is available from 4WD in their 41-75 catalog, IIRC.

    (FYI, I don't have one on my 75...)

    Correct. Gas tank skid plate was an option from 71-75. The skid is applied over the tank.
