Hello all. I took my air cleaner off this morning and completely cleaned and degreased it in preparation for some new paint. My question is this-Should there be some kind of rubber or plastic buffer between the air cleaner top and the wing nut that holds it down on the carburator? The way it fits now looks like there should be some kind of spacer.
    Thank You,
    Rob

Well I dont know, but I did want to say Semper Fi, the moter that I have is a 225 Dauntless it had what you are describing and I dont remember any thing there when I took off the air cleaner, it came from a buddy of mine and he kept the air cleaner. I have a 55' Buick Super that has a simular oil air cleaner that is on the Jeep, and there was nothing there, but a small "O" ring couldnt hurt.

Good night Chesty where ever you are...

Nothing but a wing nut holds the A/C on my '67! Never thought about it before, but as much oil as mists out and coats the filter is probably offset by some amount of dirt/dust getting in, a washer or "O" ring couldn't hurt.

I'll post in the "wanted" section during lunch today, but if any of you have a spare you want to let go for a reasonable (not eBay) price, let me know.

Mine didn't have one when I got it so I don't know if they came from the factory like that. But IIRC I got one for less than a dollar through Rockauto.com. I stumbled across it when I was looking at other parts. May be worth checking out if you can't find one at your local FLAPS.

oldyellercj, Semper Fi back at ya, and thanks!

Seems like there probably wasn't one according to everyone that replied. But I found a hard rubber bushing at the local ACE yesterday that will work perfect for the job. Only .58 cents with tax.

Don't want to hijack your post but.................it seems you all have kept the stock (oil-type) air cleaners so they must be good.
I assume they trap lots of dirt.
Isn't there lots of maintenence involved?

I haven't really started tearing into my Jeep yet but will have it in my own garage in a couple weeks. I figured on looking into swapping that oily mess out with a "normal" air cleaner. Of course then I lose the cool Dauntless sticker on the housing :) .

Should I stick with the stock air cleaner?
