The po of my '53 M38-a1 converted it over to a rear tank. While I was playing under the jeep last week, I started wondering about a skid plate for that sucker. Looks like it would probably puncture pretty easy if I ever hit a rock the wrong way. The tank isn't rusted on the inside but looks fairly beat-up on the outside. No pin-hole leaks yet but I bet they are coming. What do ya think? Skid plate for it? Fab one? Buy one? Think I should go with a poly tank w/skid plate? Or, just drive it until it does leak....then worry about it then?

    What say ye?
    :)

I think it is a CJ tank. Seems to fit like one anyway. Couldn't tell you what year or when it was put in though.

If it's a CJ tank I'd just buy the skidplate...IIRC about $60 for the version I used...

I used a sheet of Aluminum and fabbed it. Works great, let me know if you want a pic.

I would fab one myself, but then again I tend to fab just about everything. It all depends on your fab skills and access to materials.

Probably your best bet because there are several places that make them these days. Just try to get some good measurements of what you have and whoever you go to on it should be able to fix you up. I can say from experience that you will probably want a skid plate under it of some kind if you do any kind of offroading.
