I've read the oak blocks were used behind the tub to suppor the side mounted spare tire carriers. They held moisture & helped rust out. What has been used in place of the wood? Anybody got photos of their solution or mounting? TIA....

Oak was the ticket for me. You could add some 3/16" plate instead. It's still gonna keep moisture unless you weld it solid.

What size oak did you use? Was it pressure treated or did you use a treatment like Thompsons?

It was 1x8, I think. It might have been 1x6, but I don't think so. You could use a thompsons on it. I didn't. I wonder if I still have the instructions on how-to at home. I'll look for you, but I haven't seen them in a while.

FWIW, mine in my 66 is a stamped metal piece that is welded into place. Guess they changed at some point. I think I remember seeing replacements in places like Walcks or Jeepdoc

And inside that metal piece is probably a piece of oak...

Thanks for the good suggestions - One more question - how to orient the carrier bracket? I've seen pics with the 2 lug studs upper right & lower left - anybody got a pic of how it came from the factory?
Oh yea - what size bolts used to mount to the tub?

    TIA

Just checked to make sure. It is just a single piece of stamped steel with about a 6" hole in the middle that is welded in between the fender and the inside wheel well. I did a quick look in Walcks and Krage, but couldn't find a picture. I don't think that it is something a PO did since the Jeep only had 72K miles and very little rust...surprising for living most of its life in Florida.

Ahhh. But it does have a couple of hat channel pieces that are attached to the tub under the holes that have what remains of the 40 year old wood that used to be inside there. Maybe we were talking about 2 different things. Blushing heavily...

Regardless, the wood would probably be easier to switch out when it rots than a hunk of steel that is welded in.

I've seen that sort of reenforcement as well Rob. Thinking the '69 may have it? Maybe it was my '62. I'm pretty sure it was the '62. Unless ya'll are talking about hat channels? :?
