my 3rd exhaust valve is stuck, doesnt move at all up or down, it looks like the spring is slightly compressed. the part that pushes it from the cam is functioning, just the valve does not move at all. what would cause this? ill get some pics in a few mins

Could be worn valve guide with carbon build up causing the sticking.

i think its more than carbon because i hit the top if the valve with a rubber mallet and then a few times with a block of wood and a real hammer and it didnt budge

Has the jeep sat a long time? Bad , or old fuel ( where the fuel becomes varnish) can cause this. I would soak the area around the valve guide with a penetrant like carb cleaner. I have done this a couple times on stuck valves to loosed / free them up. Most of the time, I ahd to use a valve spring compressor and remove the lock and spring to get at it. Bring that piston up to TDC if you do that to prevent the valve from falling down in the cylinder.

If you think that this is because of old gas / varnish, look out because it will effect the other valves too. get rid of that stuff.

alright ill give the carb cleaner a try. If i need to replace one valve i should just buy all 4 so that everything is symetric and nice right? or can i get away with just buying 1?

If you need to replace one, you'll need to replace more than that.

Let it soak over night if you can.

sweet thanks for the tip, i soaked it in carb cleaner and pb blaster for the last 2 night and moved the valve up and down so it would move all through it, its totally free today it opens easily and closes on its own. I sprayed the other valves as well and let them soak just for the heck of it.

so what caused this? just years of carbon build up and not running for a while?
