I'm brand new to this web site only finding it 5 min. ago but I think that it is a good place to start my research. I'll get my profile fixed in due time, for now i have a '68 CJ5, it has a '67 283i chevey engine in it and what i think to be a T-18 transfer case.

The problem is that very randomly if i'm not thinking, i'll have my foot in on the clutch while going no more then 5 mpg and executing a turn (either right or left) while the jeep is in gear( usually 1st.) Aagin randomly, this will cause my gear to be stuck in 1st and nothing but the might of God himself can get it out of 1st gear. What is the secret? And why does this happen?

Thank You in advance, a soon to be late for work driver cause i can't go above 25mph jeep owner!

There is a T-18 transmission and a D-18 (Dana model 18) transfer case - I expect you have the D-18. Plus. you're in the wrong forum. You'll probably get a better response in the "Early CJ-5 and CJ-6 Tech" forum, since that's where your Jeep's year fits. The Intermediate forum is for '72 and newer.

Re the sticking, hard to tell without knowing what kind of transmission you have. You sure it's in 2WD high?

Dana 20 is the t-case, what about the transmission? Binding from being in 4wd on a hard surface, improper clutch adjustment?

If you have the 'bellcrank' clutch linkage, they can get out of adjustment very easily and will not fully release the clutch, for instance when the frame is twisting. Worn bushings in the bellcrank ends agravate the effect.

Okay guys all good, and i appriciate the help, with even more research i'm narrowing my tranny down to a muncie 20, 21 or 22. :? one phone call tomarrow should solve the quess work. to access the inside the cover is on the side. I'm thinking, after talking to some people that popping the cover and taking a look.

Even still with all this, what makes it a tranny get stuck in gear like this. Never when i'm dreiving straight or fast it's slow and making a turn with my foot on the clutch and in 1st gear?

Also how do i get back to threads that i started?? the only way i can find this is to look myself up and view my threads that way??

A muncie in a jeep? Well I guess it could be worse. The last muncie I had was in a chevelle back in 1978 and I do seem to remember it doing the same thing (at least the getting stuck in gear part). My problem was an out of adjustment shift linkage. IIRC something like in first but linkage had moved another gear enough to cause a bind (maybe reverse). Any way I fixed it by buying new linkage w/ a lockout reverse. My suggestion to you however is to sell the muncie and get a T-18. Its a 4 speed w/ a granny low and gearing much more suited to a jeep. Its strong enough to handle your 283 as well. BTW I think your thread was moved here from the intermediate page. This is the "early cj5 and cj6 tech" page.:v6:

Check your shift linkage bushings, I suspect they are worn out 'causing your linkage to bind up. Remove shifter linkage from trans, then move both shift levers(on the trans) to neutral, then adjust linkage to match up when shifter is in neutral. You probably have an Novak or AA kit installed to be able to use the Muncie trans/ Dana 18 transfer case. Let us know what you figure out.

Yup - shift linkage. I took a Muncie out of my '51 that had the Hurst Shift kit on it.
