I need to adjust the position of my new distributor (the Jeep is running now, by the way). If the distributor is off, can that cause the engine to keep running after you switch off the ignition or is that a faulty ignition switch?

sounds more like you are getting feed back from the alternator to the ignition system. Once the engine is running there is enough power feeding back up the exciter wire to keep it running. I would start by splicing a power diode into the exciter wire. This will ensure this problem does not happen.

Better yet, what if I connect the exciter wire to the field terminal? I completely forgot to do that today!

I knew I was too stupid to wire this thing up lol

I had the same problem when I first started the engine after the Painless Wiring install. The Diode worked, since it allows only a one way transfer of power.

But I have to say, it was the strangest thing to not be able to stop the engine, when before I couldn't start it. Ha!

I speak from experience. :D I had the same problem when I custom wired my electrical system too.

I believe you guys, no worries... and I am going to add a diode to the wire... but I think actually connecting the wire to the alternator after I forgot will be a big help., too :)

What type of diode would you guys suggest I use/purchase, whatever? I went to NAPA, assuming it was something simple. The guy pretended No hablas (he forgot that I bought plug wires from him Tuesday and he hablas'd then). I came back to check the Net and I realize... there are lots of different kinds of diodes. In fact, my Dad's old tool box has a case with a bunch of diodes in it (not telling what rating or whatever).

And, now that I think about it, how do I splice those two long skinny diode legs into a wire? Just solder it?

Do you guys think an 8 amp will be enough? And, once I have it soldered into the wire and reattach the exciter, will electrical tape and a wire loom be enough protection for it?

Actually, guys, I was able to find (through almost an hour and a half of searching) what I needed to know... because someone posted a 6 volt to 12 volt conversion article for tractors!

If you don't get it to go, let me now and I'll get you the Diode part number. I'll also look at my truck and tell you exactly how to hook it up. I just spliced the diode into the existing wire. You don't need to solder, but you have to put the diode the right way. If you put the stripe of the diode in the wrong direction, it won't work, and you won't know why.
