I have a 77 cj5 and the steering wheel will move towards you and back into the engine compartment about 2 inches freely. The lower steering coupler has been replaced. All upper steering components (firewall up) seems to be ok. Could it be the bearing near the firewall in the engine compartment? Does that hold the shaft from moving up and down? or just side to side? Any help would be appreciated.

I;m not sure about all of them, but this one does not have tilt. Since you know the area. Are there any places that people could go wheeling and not get in trouble around here. I live in Hendersonville and there is one place close by, but that is about it.

I went to Tennessee Off Road and looked at one of their CJ's and I believe that the steering bearing near the firewall is messed up. I will see if I can rig something.
