Discovered a hole in the tank of my 70. Thinking of buying a new tank. Are all the underseat tanks for a CJ5 the same? Anybody use the poly tanks? Recomendations for a vendor?

    thanks

just put mine into the radiator shop, they are going to boil it out, coat the inside, and weld up any small holes for around $125 to $150. the guy said he has done a bunch and had no complaints so we will see. I have looked for replacements and found plastic and steel. also they have a slanted inlet, but mine is strait up???? Price from $145-$300. hope this helps

    I will recommend them, MTS.

There's plenty of info on 'em here. http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/search.php?searchid=178790

I've bought two from them so far. Top notch quality and people work with. No seams that seem to cause mounting problems too.

Err, I guess your '70 is an earlier one with the underseat tank. Ignore my mounting comment. That applies to rear mount tanks.

    Straight up inlet??????

I have a mts tank in mine and like it. The original steel tank lasted 35 years, so no complaints there either.

Mine is an early (Jan 70) and has the underseat tank. Is it any different than any other CJ5 underseat tank? I am thinking about the rad shop repair maybe, only one hole at a wear spot on the tank bottom.

I ordered the poly (MTS). I would not recommend one for the underseat tank. Mine was a poor fit as far as I'm concerned. The tank sending unit area was "bowed up" and I had to place another brace across the top to "push" it back to where it belonged. I couldn't figure out why my gauge was showing the wrong level, until I found this problem. HUGE deal? NO, pain in the arse to diagnose ? YES. (take the seat out, put it back in, take the seat out, put it back in, REPEAT, until you figure out its not the sending unit, its the shape of the tank. Now that I've got a brace on either side of the retaining ring holding the sending unit area down, all is OK, but with a metal tank this would not have been a problem. (metal doesn't flew like the poly one did.) Just my two cents, most people will swear by MTS poly for lack of leaks around the seams. My original metal one lasted 30+ years and I would expect a new metal one to do the same. The cap still leaks when the jeep is leaning to the driver side too. Don't be sold on a "leakless" cap for the MTS tanks. I did a search and nobody has solved that problem, metal or poly. At least not that I've heard of.

My orig. tank was beyond repair and I figured that ploy was the way to go for a lifetime. I cannot recall where I made my purchase (4WD Hardware I'd bet) but I have been pleased.

I did not share the same warped top and sending unit section scenario but I do not doubt that it is often a problem. My 0.02-

I have been happy with my poly underseat for my 61 CJ5. One slight problem is the gas cap doesnt go on as easily as I would like though. but no other problems with it. Ordered mine 4 years ago from Quaratec. No bowing of the top... but I also don't doubt it happens.
