I have a 68 cj5 that started life as a 4 cyl. It has a 77 231 in the engine bay. It has been running about 215-230 degrees recently. The top of the radiator where the cap goes on is bent. I installed a new cap in it seems to be working better, however I am still running around that temp and when I stop coolant and steam come out. I want to replace the rad. but do not know what to go with. It has the stock 4 cyl for the f-head. I think i need to go with something bigger for the larger engine that has been put in. I have an electric fan that i run in front of the rad.
    Any ideas.

I had the same problem with the same engine (77 231) I had my radiator recored, changed water pump, 3 different thermostats and changed the cap too. Finally I bought an aluminum radiator, 2 core with 1 inch tubes. Problem solved.

I've got a 2A with a 225 and I put in a 65 Mustang two core radiator. It was inexpensive($120.00) and works fine. Three core units are available too.

    I have almost the same setup...I ended up using a 78 monza,v6, 3 core.
I had to fabricate mounting brackts, but the fit is just great. I tried the
mustang radiator, it fit fine except in my circumstances the lower outlet was to close to differential.

Where did you get your aluminum from and did you have to do anything special to mount it. I think that is the route i am going to take.

I got it on ebay. Here is what I got. He had to shorten it a bit to fit. He was way cool. If your interested just tell him to make it like he did for mine. He should have the template he made from mine. I also had him put mounting flanges on mine. I just drilled 4 holes and it bolted right up to stock mounts. The only thing is that I did not tell him to elbow up and out on the bottom outlet as my stock radiator so you need to tell him about that or the oil filter will be in the way. I had my local radiator shop put an elbow on for me. Only draw back was I couldnt use a mechanical fan and had to use an electric fan as a pusher in the front of the radiator due to limited space. Any questions just ask. if you want I can post pics of the radiator installed.
