Hey guys, love yall's web site, a bunch of nice jeeps here. This my first time to start a thread here. I just bought a cj5 w/hurricane-4 t-90 and dana 18. Thing doesn't even run good yet, and already I like it over my 89' cherokee. No wonder this is a big forum, your machines are bad. Hopefully, eventually, mine will be to, which brings up my first out a million questions. Where is the vin? I researched and found that is supposed to be on the driver's side firewall, but couldn't find it, any help?

If those are pictures from under the hood I still can't find it. About where the pictures are showing it to be I have a fuse panel.:( If it helps I just found an insurance card dating it to be a 53 willys, but that can't be correct, right? They only made cj5s from 55 to 70. The vin on the card is md50853.

Ah-ha! You have an M38A1. :) So '53 could be correct. At least that's what I'm guessing by the "md" prefix. Someone else here will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh and the VIN should be on the frame I think. Someone here with an A1 should be able to help.

Have any pics of your rig?

Nah, the digi cam is down. I appreciate the info. I've thought about looking up the po and asking a few questions, and give him back a receipt left in the glove box with his credit card # on it. (Thank god i'm honest).

The glove box is on the driver's side. Are there any mechanical differences between the 5 and a1?

That's an A1 then with the glove box on the DS.

    24V if not converted.

    Drivetrain is the same.

    Shackle reversal.

There's other stuff that I'm not real well versed in since I've never owned one.

M38a1 doesn't have the CJ style of vin tag. the MD50853 is the body serial number. It is located on the front of the passenger's side wheel house.

Sorry guys, I have been busy and not able to check this in a while. There is a tag behind the passenger seat on the wheel well but the whole tub floor is covered in a spray on liner (por?), and I'm afraid to hit it with a wire brush for fear of rubbing off what is underneath it. Any suggestions? Either way, I would like to know what the year model is, is that on that body serial number tag?

could do a pencil rubbing on paper. I think for piece of mind I would remove the coating on the tag.
