axle questions

I bought a frame with a dana rear 44 axel. I currently has a amc 20 rear axel.Which one is better

I am just going to use for regular driving,no off roading

Then you would be fine with the 20, unless you are going with 35" or bigger tires or a big engine (and like the skinney pedal).

If the D44 is from a '72-'75, it is a great swap for the NT centered M20 in a CJ7 (I run one in my '81 Scrambler), just make sure you match your f&r gear ratios if you ever plan on putting it in 4wd. (intermediate '5s and '6s typically ran 3.73 gears, while CJ7s often ran 3.31 or numerically lower)

If the D44 is offset, you can swap it into the rear of a Quadratrac CJ7, but only the '69-'71 D44 with the one piece shafts are worth the trouble, IMHO.

For either of these swaps you will have to move the spring perches.

If the AMC 20 has aftermarket 1-piece flanged axles in it, it is as strong as or stronger than a 44.

What motor are you running? My V8 destroyed the 20 at hammer time, the 44 has held up fine stock.
