What have you guys done to paint the firewall and do some mods to it with the motor still in the bay? I have the front clip off, and i have to repalce the firewall plate i have for my pedals to bolt to. They bent the metal, but it wa because a part of it was not braced. So i want to repalce the metal and paint it, and do a little more body work while there. As you know it is difficult to do with the motor in the engine bay. I am kind of debating on weather to take the motor out, or lift the body off and lay it farther down the back of the frame to have at the firewall. I think i can get my hoist bolted to the roll cage and suspend it from that as i roll th eframe back a bit from the body. What are the tips you guys have to give? I ahve done this before, but i am just trying not to take th ebody completely off, and i want to keep as much of th ejeep in the garage, and i am running out of room.

    Been there, done that-

It wasn't all that hard to do but I did have the wiring harness pulled at the time & everything that would unbolt unbolted. Also had the wheels off whick probaly helped as well.

Trust me on this- Don't forget to pull the tranny covers & paint the bottom of them to match:oops:

Also crawl underneath & paint the bottom sides of the toe boards & body braces.

I helped a buddy do just that a few years ago. We just disconnected the harness at the couplers, pulled the battery tray and heater box, removed the floor pans, removed the 2 steering column bolts, and after removing all but the rearmost body bolts (loosened those), we lifted the front of the tub about 2 ft and tied it off w/ a rope to the ceiling joists in his garage. There's a couple of other things that need to be disconnected like choke cable, throttle linkage, etc., but it gets it up and out of the way of things so you can paint it. And as mentioned don't forget the floor pans.:v6:

Pulling the engine, tranny, and tcase as a unit should be really easy with the front clip off... That's what I would do, but you know me - I'm Mr. Anal-retentive.

I am leaninng more to that. Gonna get the hoist out and leveitage the body off, i just have to think about the chassis. Possibly i may get some wheel casters and rol lthe chassis around.

Anyone make their own car mvoers? How large of a caster do i need and how thick of wood to use, or cant i use wood?

Got to thinking more last night. I am going to have to do the second fuel filler area and fill in my tail light holes while i am doing all of this, i do not want to have to weld again and repaint after it is all said and done :(
