Clutch/gearbox question

On my 75 w/258, in order to put the three speed in reverse, I have to come to a complete stop..wait for about 30 seconds and then slowly push the gearshift into reverse, with a little gnashing of teeth . The other method is to slip it into first gear, that stops the rotation.... and then it easily slips into reverse.

Just wondering if this is typical of the stock three speed set-up or is there an adjustment I can make to the clutch to ease the shifting into reverse without going to first first...

30 seconds is a long time for this ... 3-5 seconds would be more typical. Shifting into 1st then reverse is a typical strategy if you want to shift faster.

Even on newer vehicles... like the 5-speed in my '99 Chevy S10... reverse will sometimes clash if I don't go into 1st, first :D. I've been doing the 1st-before-reverse thing for so long it's "automatic"... I do it without even realizing it.
