Zoomed through a search, and where there were pix , of course, now they're gone. On my 61, I made a pretty stout hold-down to replace the old setup. The 70, well, that don't look so good. I believe in a solid hold-down and a clean tray. No bungees or science experiments growing there, thank you. Ratchet straps get in the way, from the ones I've seen.

When this was all together it held the battery held down catty-wompus at best, and I can't get with that. Not like it would have fallen off tomorrow, but I prefer a more uniform hold on the thing.

Gonna clean up and paint something in there, then rig some kind of hold-down that doesn't interfere with checking the levels without disassembling the stupid thing.

    Any suggestions?

Yup! hold down looks great, Don! If I PM'd some measurements, could you fab a piece that does what I want? Well, of course you can!! This may be my favorite option. I'll draw up a sketch of sorts or whatever you want to see; we'll go from there? My battery may look different in five years, but, so will I.....

As I recall, you and I have the same hairdo(s)

I made a new tray out of angle iron (1"x1"x1/8") to hold the group 27 marine battery that I replaced the optima with.

I just went to the FLAPS and bought two of the "J-ended" threaded rods and a brace that goes across the top. Drilled holes in the front and back of the tray (rather than the sides) for the rods to hook into. Slapped the brace across the top and cinched it down with wing nuts. Worked like a charm!!!

Tim, that sounds like what I did for the F-head with the tray over the axle. Keeps the hold-down away from the terminals and leaves the caps open to check without pulling the thing off first.

I pretty much took the same approach as Tim on my 75. Found the stainless steel rods with wing nuts at a Marine store and fabricated a 16 gauge piece that attaches at the back with a phillips head screw and at the front with a hole drilled in the tray....Easy and great access...

Your FLAPS may have the plastic hold-down and two j-bolts that would hold the battery in the original manner. Works well, doesn't corrode.
