    i did that on my old bumper. but didnt just use the crossmember, i mated the bumper to the frame also. worked nice, i did get yanked by it,but i had the diagonal supports instact on the jeep, sometimes people remove them and if they are removed or damaged it would not be a strong setup by itself.

    I've done something like that except instead of a flat piece of steel I used angle iron for a little extra welding area and support.

    I did this, I don't intend to tow anything over 800lbs, mostly I will be using a tag along (one of those basket things that plugs into a receiver hitch). A small trailer/bike rack would be ok too.
