I am taking a breather for now. Before I start, once again a F134.

I am trying to re-install the two packings for the rear main seal at the rear of the oil pan. What a PIA!

Any tricks. I tried oil, di-electric silicone grease as well. All light coats. Been prodding, tapping, etc. I can not get those boogers in more than half way. Passages are clean. Do I need to loosen the retainer and then insert them, then retorque the retainer back? The service manual says to insert them after.

    ANY TRICKS?
    Thanks

I am soaking in MMO right now. I figured if that doesn't do it than :?

I figured the old ones slid in so well that these would too. They were
boogered up and shorter, I guess the PO cut them off and that is where my leak was coming from.

    Thanks

The PO did. That's why I was leaking oil. Trying to fix a few things while doing the timing thing.

    Thanks

Any other suggestions? This has got to be much easier to do out of the vehicle on a stand. These boogers are tough.

I'd almost suggest liquid dish soap

Why dontcha do Dr. Vern's RTV method? I did it and am happy with the results. Basically, you CLEAN out the cap and seal areas really well with brake cleaner, reinstall the cap, then you literally inject RTV into the holes until you can't squeeze anymore in. By forcing it in, you make it fill all the little nooks until it's sealed up. Again, it worked for me, buy YMMV.

That was exactly what I was talking about with my father in law. I have these huge syringes for hydraulic samples at work. I was thinking about filling that puppy up and injecting it. I guess it has already been proven.

I have tried silicon grease, oil, MMO, vaseline. Pulled the cap and tried to reinstall it with the packings half way in. Worked well except for the last quarter of the way.

Anyway, taking a break. I almost made a 2500 pound boat anchor today:evil:

What type of RTV did Dr. Vern use?

Don't recall, but IIRC I used the black. I still get a drip here and there, but nothing like used to be. Definately a big improvement.
