What are the two rubber looking dowels (approx 3" long) in the rear of the oil pan that slide up into the casing for?

They seal between the main bearing cap and the crankcase.

Sorry for the questions, I know they are pretty basic, but I am learning as I go here. The two in there are pretty chewed up. Can I just pull them out and replace them with the other two? If so they slide in all the way-flush right.

    Thanks

OK. Found it in the service manual now that I know what I was looking for. I wonder if that was where I was leaking from then. They looked pretty beat up. Anyways.

    Thanks

Everyone feel free to ask away with questions. I seriously doubt any of us were born knowing how to work on stuff. I would assume you found out not to cut them off also?

Do not cut them off to fit flush! As you tighten down the oil pan they will compress to fill the hole they're in. Get it good and clean in there so the have a good sealing surface.
