Is this a new aftermarket pump? I had it all primed with ready to re-install when I remembered the FSM has a picture of a pump with an inner and outer gear, not two meshing gears. Thanks

I've got one like that as well. Mine was on a factory rebuit engine, I believe it must be a later design.

Whatever you do DON'T try to get the drive gear off the shaft, I screwed up both of these trying that :(.

My gasket for the top cover does not fit as it is for the original one. That gasket looks like plain paper. Anyone see a problem reusing the original or should I try and match up the thickness and cut my own.

    Thanks

I don't know anything about that pump, but the AMC V8s use a pump design with two meshing gears, same as above. On that app, the cover gasket thickness is very critical to the effectivness of the pump. The gears should stick out of the pump body enough to make up most of the thickness of the gasket. Clearance of 0.002 to 0.006, 0.002 preferred, is spec'd.

Maybe not the same specs for this pump, but the principle is the same, and you can't use just any gasket.

I figured as much. I read basically the same thing in the service manual for the original pump. Since the gasket is still whole and attached to the cover plate still, I think I will slap her back together and cross my fingers. Still wish I had a torque value, but what-the-hey...I'll shoot for finger tight and half a turn.

Put some Plastigage in there and see what you have for clearance.

UMMMM...Can you kinda explain a bit more. Clearance from the top of the gear to the cover plate? Keep it dirt road simple right now.R)

Plastigage...heard of it...available at regular auto parts store, correct?

Si. Available in several different thicknesses, depending on the clearnace you need to measure.

Cut a piece off and apply it to one half of the pieces being measured, then assemble and toque to spec. Don't spin the pump once it's torqued!

Disassemble, and compare the width of the plastigage strip to the markings on the paper wrapper to get the assembled clearance.

    Clear as mud?
