    Another quickie.

Is the camshaft gear supposed to be a cheesy poly-plastic sorta thing and not steel? My crankshaft gear is good ole steel. Is my crankshaft some aftermarket thing?

Isn't it phenolic, fiber reinforced? AFAIK this is an early structural composite, and was used to reduce the noise from the gear drive (gear driven can whine like a blower). The V6 used a nylon-toothed OEM cam gear for the same reason.

It is 'cheesey' for a reason.

    It is a sacrificial gear.

If anything in the system gets locked up the gear will go without taking the internal hard parts.

It is usually standard to build a sacrificial link in mechanical chains so that collateral damage in case of a lock up are minimal
