I have everything cut loose or disconnected and one side of the body bolts removed.

My challenges are going to be around the steering and levers. Somebody welded my steering wheel on so I can't remove that. I started to figure out how to remove the shaft from the box, but decided that would be a bad idea. I ended up removing the box from the frame and disconnecting the pitman arm from that long piece (what are these parts really called?) Is this goin to be too heavy?

My boots are still in good shape on the shift levers, but I believe somebody epoxied the balls on them. How much torque can I put on them before I cause some internal damage?

    Drag link.

    Nope.

Epoxy weakens when heated, a propane torch applied near the shft tops should get them movable with a pair of pump pliers. Alternatively take a hand grinder & go at them- replacement knob sets are cheap.

You can run a hacksaw right through the knobs, there is no metal insert in them at all. Split it down the middle and give a twist with the channel-locks and it will pop right off.

Great. The knobs have become knurled form wrenching anyway.

it is easy to take the cam (column and tube) away from the box, just unbolt the 3 or 4 bolts on top. Then twist the wheel (to the left?) and it will all come out. It is not so easy, however, to get it back together, so unless you are going to disassemble your box anyway, I don't recommend it. I did it that way, but my box needed attention anyways. The tub is not too heavy, without the wheel in the way, wife and I picked it right up and removed it. I would just cutoff the knobs you mentioned.

I had to get some of the neighbors to help out.....

I will admit, it would have helped had I removed the battery from the cowl, and the windshield frame and glass. Oh well.

If no help is available, this way to lift your tub off works great. of course steering wheel was removed first.[IMG]

one of the m38 manuals has pics of lifting the tub off using a rope pulley system, so I figured it might work for the cj tub. W/O even a small boy to help out, & my spine held together W/steel rods & wire I dont need to pop a gasket lifting more than I can. Picking the tub up is no big deal, getting up & over the steering column shaft by myself is a real chore. I do have some bracing across tub where straps wrap around sides, to keep it from pulling inward. I didnt notice any sideward stress on tub, but the bracing justs adds some protection.
for anyone with limited ability in the mobility or strength fields, this method works OK. Makes taking my tubs off a little simpler and I can do it by myself Anytime I wish W/O having help.
