I just got rid of the spring over and now it is back to stock. I want to put the stock steering back on but ran into a problem. Please bare with me on this.
The PO gave me one tie rod or drag link with the Jeep but it seems I am missing a rod. The steering on my 69 now has a knuckle to knuckle tie rod with a tie rod end sticking straight out the front about two inches from the passenger side knuckle(not factory?). I think the PO added this tie rod and fabbed up the rod coming from the tie rod end to the the bellcrank. According to pictures in catalogs this knuckle to knuckle is wrong for earlier CJ's. Do I need a 24.5" right side tie rod with a 19.75" left side? Looking in the Kaiser Willys Auto Supply catalog that is what is listed but for a four cylinder, is there a difference or can I order these two assemblies and be done with it? I cannot find any listings for steering parts for the V6 if there is any real difference.
I wish I could put a picture of it up here to make this easier, sorry. Please help, this is the last thing I need to do so I can drive it. thanks

unless you are dead set against it, I would keep the current system you describe. Much better than the other short rods set-ups.
Here's a pic of what you are describing, correct ?

Yes, I have the lower rod but need to get the upper I suppose now. That is if I keep the knuckle to knuckle rod that is on there now. Where can I find the upper rod or what year Jeep could I order that from since that was not the factory setup for 69?
