Quick Tranny / tcase question

    Ok, I've decided to call Herm today and order a new T90 long shaft and D18. Here's my plan...

    1) Remove Tranny cover from tub floor
    2) Remove drive shafts
    3) Unbolt tranny from bellhousing adapter
    4) Support engine and tranny crossmember and unbolt crossmember from frame
    5) Remove shift tower
    6) Slide tranny / tcase to the rear and remove

    Is there anything more to it than that? The clutch should remain lined up and in place, correct? Do I need to order anything else from herm?

    Your thoughts please...

    Sounds right ,I might would swap 3 and 4.
    I always just unbolt stuff till something hits the floor . If its not what I want I unbolt more stuff R)

    Clutch should stay aligned. While you're taking a break, go buy yourself a couple 6" bolts the same size as the ones that go into the bellhousing. This will help make it easy to slide the tranny in correctly.

    Oh, and you may want to take the transfer case shifters off as well. ;)

    unscrew speedo cable
    they don't stretch very well...
    and I would insert #5 between 1 and 2

    I forgot about the tcase shifters. Do I need the gasket for the shift tower? Is there anything else you guys can think of? I'll call Herm around lunch time. I just want to be sure I'm not overlooking anything.

    This swap could easily be done over a weekend, right? I don't see why not...

    Matching 3.44 first gear cluster to go with the 3.44 gear input shaft you buying!? I think its a 14 tooth input-35 tooth cluster gear.

    Can you explain more or either take pictures of how you are supporting the tranny crossmember and engine? Are you using jacks for this or something home-made? I will be switching out my t-86 in the future and was wondering about this. Thanks!!

    I have 2 floor jacks. I will use the small one and a 4x6 to support the engine via the oil pan. The bigger jack will be used to support the tranny / tcase.

    I wouldn't even consider the swap without installing a new clutch disc and throw out bearing while it's apart. Unless they are REALLY low mileage.

    One more question...

    Would I be better off buying one of Herms SM465/D18 combos since I have the 350? Would that be better AND what else would I have to factor in? Drive shafts, etc?

    I would look into it. I did some figuring a couple months ago and my cost for the Novak Adaptor and rebuild kit alone is @$725 – that leaves @ $175 for the cost of the tranny and anything else (outside a rebuild kit) you find wrong in a SM465.

    Other items are driveline, clutch, sheet metal for cover – at least that is as far as I have gottin with my planning.

    the T90 will hold up to the SBC just fine
    no wheelies and no dumping the clutch
    can't see the effort into the 4spd when all you gain is a granny low
    would you use a granny low enough to warrant the swap ?

    If it was me i would go with the four speed because a granny gear can be very useful when crawling over rocks or parking in tight places. Plus it add to the value of the jeep if you sell it.

    Can't be done from what I thought. That gear can only be used with the fhead short shaft. could be wrong though...

    Rear driveshaft will be short. New crossmember or the old one spaced down. shifter tower will be higher. Front driveshaft will need to be longer. Clutch linkage. Other than that, it drops right in:twisted:

    Here are some numbers that conviced me that I would like the SM465 - even if I don't use the granny that much:
    SM 465 6.55, 3.58, 1.7, 1
    T-90A - , 2.98, 1.66, 1
    T-90C - , 3.44, 1.85, 1 (if you could even get this - which you can not on a V6)

    I am going to finish up with the 4.88's and that ought to keep me real happy. YMMV :)

    I'll add Driveline modifcations and a gallon of gear oil just for the transmission.

    I'm still working on drivelines.:oops:
