I finally scored a 35# car flywheel for the 231! It came off a 1960's Buick 300 V8. (not the easiest to find) Shaves a solid 20# off the rotating assembly for the turbo motor. Some members here are using the lighter flywheel for quicker RPM response than stock. However, the heavy Jeep flywheel has an important job of providing low RPM "grunt" (don't throw the baby out with the bathwater yet). IMPORTANT as discussed here alot, Search on external and internal balancing to understand the importance of this when mixing/matching 225 and 231 flywheels and Harmonic dampers / blancers.

I have two Jeep V6 flywheels available if anyone needs them.

Other good reseach for the ecj5 records....

Stay with Buick as the Pontiac and Chevy wont bolt up to the crank. Someone out there in cyberland tried a Pontiac and the holes were "close". Also, the 231 crank may not have a pilot bushing provision (formerly an automatic). Check this while on the bench or it is at the machine shop, not when you are ready to install the trans. A chevy pilot may work, check with your builder. Centerforce part numbers CF361874 & CFT361874 match almost all Buick V6 and V8 160 tooth flywheels for 60's up to 70's and 80's. Turbo V6 Regals used 160 tooth flexplates. Mini starters that fit chevy's are being used by many Buick guys. This includes LT1 and LT4 starters but you must use different bolts. most comments out there claim that tooth pitch is most important, not neccessarily count. Chevy is 153 and 168 count. I am going to pursue that and will report back. You can buy mini starters for $100 shipped, 12/mo warranty from the Site admin over on http://www.turbobuicks.com/store2/products.asp?cat=3 He has sold over 500 and has a track record of replacing any failed units with out a hassle. These are smaller, 10# lighter, and have the unique sound. However, your $40-$60 Autozone or NAPA starter will do fine.

I am officially green with envy.

I have been looking for a lightweight flywheel for many months now. I didn't know a V8 flywheel would work. If you have any other types of Buick flywheels to look for, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    JC
