    Here's the story:
My cj5 has the 225V6, and has been running all winter as my plow vehicle. Maybe a little hard to get warmed up (needed to be choked a while), and I've wondered if it was too rich because of the smell. (Also needs a new radiator, but that's a different story) Anyway, I started it one day to move it and didn't let it warm up much and then it died when I took my foot off the clutch. Hasn't started since. I checked the plugs (new in Dec. '05) and they were really fouled w/ carbon deposits. I cleaned them and it still wouldn't start. The points looked burned so I put on new points, condenser, rotor, cap, and wires. I think I set the timing right with a static method I read about. It seems to have a bright spark, and at least some gas, but will not start. I don't have any way to check fuel pressure or compression. Any suggestions? :?
By the way, great forum; I'm an avid archive miner!

You can pull off the gas line by the carb, and in a plastic bottle crank it over and make sure you are getting gas.

Sounds like the timing chain might have jumped.Line up the timing mark and check to see if the rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire. You may have to turn it 1 revolution to get to #1tdc.The extra warm up time is because your heat crossover in the intake is plugged with carbon and not heating the base of your carb.

So I have enough fuel (6 oz in ~10 sec), and initially the timing mark was lined up at 5 btdc when the rotor was in the #1 position. Advancing/retarding by 5 doesn't help. So what can I do? How can I get it timed properly again if the chain DID skip? Is this for sure the problem?:?

I've had trouble with what seemed like the needle valve in the carb sticking shut. Motor starts for a brief time and then dies as soon as the gas in the float bowl runs out.

You could check this by removing the top of the carb (several screws) and then take a peek to see if the float bowl has gas. The gas "filter" at the carb where the fuel line hooks up could be plugged also.

If your plugs are really fouled, I would invest in a new set. Even if they were new in December. A fresh set will make it start much easier.

You are right in your analysis. Spark, fuel and air and get those items to the right place at the right time and it should run.

Might just be your timing is off or maybe your carburetor is too rich.

Just consider it a challenge and you will soon find out what it is causing it not to start.

Let us know how you come out.
