First, i want to thank all who posted a reply to my first post. I recently acquired this 65 as you see it here:

After receiving numerous suggestions to help with the steering issue by getting rid of these shackles:
    http://home.swbell.net/tape-rr/shackle.jpg
I think I am going to leave the springs as is and reduce the shackle height. Can someone plese help identifying the length? Also, would stock shackles make the jeep clear the 31" tires that are on there now?
I looked in the manual, and from what i can see, stock has no shackle at all....just a bracket to hold the spring. I want to be safe out there....
From the bottom of the frame to the lower bolt is 6"
From bolt to bolt is 4.5" I dont need to know what brand or manufacturer...but rather what height it is? A 4 inch lift shackle for instance?
What was the original distance from bottom of frame to bolt center?
Anyway to identify what kind of lift the current springs has? I'd like to know what i got here...

    Thanks
Any input at all would be greatly appreciated. This is my first jeep....imagine that....46 yeras old and a first jeep. Better late than never huh?

    PS...a good source for shackles?

i am looking at picking up a set of more shackles shortly, seen here:
    http://www.mountainoffroad.com/more.htm

but those are a bit spendy if it's not exactly what you're looking for right now. the stock shackles can be seen here:
    http://www.jeepdoc.com/catalog/zproducts.asp?id=195
    http://www.4wd.com/newsite/shop/productdetail.asp?pid=916646

they should be assemly number nin on krage's page, but they don't list the part. the shackles are, however, the same as those seen on the 4wd page above. as for the tires, i'm currently running the stock shackles and a 2.5 inch lift and clearing 31's with ease. i was clearing them quite well when the springs were riding on the bump stops as well.

A stock CJ clears 31s. No lift required.

    EDIT:
I believe stock shackles are 3 1/4" bolt ctr to ctr.
At 4.5", these are 1 1/4 longer than stock. That's about the max most of us would go. Should be OK if you want to keep them.

Those shackles may be home built but look OK, just long.

I've used confer shackles, both long and short. They're $ but good quality.

I really haven't liked any of the stock shackles - there are several styles of them. If you want to go stock or near stock length I would check out the short confers.

the M.O.R.E. 's have a 3/4" shackle. which is what i decided on and used. not much lift which is fine with me since i run 31" tires and don't want much lift. much stronger than the stock shackle and seem to be about the lowest lift i could find at the time. about $69/ pair. although i still need to increase my caster a bit.

Thanks everyone for the replies. So it appears I have at least 1 1/4 at the shackles....and rest must be in the springs. Would there be any way to tell for sure how much lift is in the springs if I measured accurately from the top of the tires to the bottoms of the fender flares? I'm jsut trying to deduce exactly what i have here...

    Thank again..

whatever the length of the shackle is over stock, you only gain 1/2 that in lift. so if they're only 1.25 longer than stock, you only have about 5/8" worth of shackle lift. The rest of the lift, if any is coming from springs. Just looking at the pic, I would call those 4" lift springs.

Taper Mike--I see you're getting a lot of responses with suggestions, and measurements, when I think what you want is help identifying what is on your new jeep. Your shackles look exactly like Warrior Products 2 1/2" lift shackles (albeit homemade); they have to be 5" longer than stock, mounted on the end of the leaf spring in order to get the 2 1/2 inches of lift at the center/axle. Your spotter better be good, or these are magnets for rocks, and can bend the rear of your springs if the impact is hard enough. Maybe you can fabricate some guards/sliders in front of them. I've seen other jeeps with this mod, and am thinking about shackle reversal, or sliders for mine depending on which way I go. As four your springs, they definitely are aftermarket lift springs, about 2-2 1/2" lift. Most manufacturer's paint their name and model number on the tops. If you can clean yours, you might be able to read whose they are and which model #, and then call a 4X shop for them to look up how much lift they have, or you can just drive it to a shop to find out = 4 Wheel Parts, OffRoad Warehouse, or a local shop. With your current setup, you can clear 33's, if you go back to stock shackles you can still clear the 31's, as many have said. I noticed your bumpstops look original as well, so if you get any fender rub after your changes you might look into aftermarket upgrading those. Anyway, I hope this helps, and have fun driving your Jeep!--Mike
