    no stupid questions here...
other than the early Renegade models, they were a dealer installed option up till 1975
the factory installed units weren't until the 1976 model year I believe
and I don't recall any govt mandate for that, maybe someone else can answer that question

Not positive, but I would say no on the government mandate

I bought a '75 Cj5 in late '75 used, it had a factory rollbar in it. Same purty sunshine yellow color as the jeep. But wait, I was just a senior in high school, my memory may have been clouded.

they do list a sport bar for 74-78, but no part number
(you made me go look in the book)
but the footnote states: "Available only as part of the original Special Equipment Kit."
what the heck does that mean ?
    Renegade only ?

I had thought the factory installed/painted roll bars started in '74, or maybe '75. I recall the newer CJ-5's roll bars (newer than my '73) had the nice, shiny body color finish, and weren't Renegades. Must be some other package. No factory roll bar in the CJ-6 though.

We have a '79 jeep built for a gas station with no roll bar or back seat.

Best I can remember, seat belts started in the 70's. We have a few older cars with some as an option, but they started becoming regular equipment sometime in the 70's I believe.

FWIW...I bought my first CJ5 in June of 1974 and the roll bar was not standard equipment, a dealer installed option only.
