I have a Jeep tee-shirt, got it online or somewhere, has my Jeep, only civilian, with steps.

I don't see them often around here, and my paint job is so freaking incredible, I can't stand to either remind people not to step on the body when climbing in, as much as I hate to bite my lip when I don't and they do.

Steps look cool, but I'd have to take them out while hard-runnin'.

    Thanks.

hows about something to cover up the bottom lip on the door opening? mine came with some stainless steel covers that managed to remain on the jeep when the rebuild was "done".

Ouch! $167 for those steps is a little high. You can buy these new for $35 a pair. I'm about to order some to help my 5'-0" tall wife w/ getting in and out of the Jeep. Maybe I should buy an extra set, get them dirty and put them up for sale on E-Bay. R)

Mine had them on it until my Grandfather ripped one out on a boulder. He promptly took the other one off at camp. Left the damage for me to fix many years later.....

FWIW, you can get a piece of aluminum channel (3/4" IIRC) and that will slip right over the door sill.
Also, you might consider a strip of "grip tape" or "stair tread". Think that's what I'm gonna do.....

steps were about the first item the owner took off/removed from the Jeep when they got it home
that is, if he was going to do any Jeeping with his Jeep...

Do they hang down lower than a muffler?

They're definitely vulnerable, but I'm gonna have 'em on mine. Gotta have some way to get my fatass in and out, I'm not hauling a milk crate around for a step. In fact, I picked up a great one cheap from Jim!

Hmm, those hang down quite a bit lower than I was anticipating. Looks like I'm on to 'Plan B'. Thanks for the pic Ron.

While we were in Moab a few years ago, we stopped for lunch in a nice scenic spot. Already parked there, was a big ole YJ with the weirdest rock rails we had ever seen and we were trying to figure out how you'd get into the thing. We're all standing around checking it out when the owners walked up, so we asked them. "oh, easy..." he says. He opens up the door and throws down an old horse stirrup that hangs down from the door opening

While practical and out of the way while wheeling, we still got a good chuckle out of it.

Being the gentleman that I am I would gladly give the young lady a rump assist!

What about those fender mats you see the guys lean on as they work on the engine? That would be easy to stow away. Getting height to get into the vehicle in the first place is a more difficult problem as CJ storage is at a premium.

Advance Adapters has some spring loaded fold down steps. When you start to step on them they go down about 8" and then when you're in and you take your foot off, they spring back up. They are about 1 1/2" thick.

Why not just get some nerf bars or rails of some kind. I made a set for my old jeep....let me look for a pick.

Those stirrups are funny. A little too redneck for me (not that there's anything wrong with that :D ). For now, I bolted on some bent tube that I had. I'll try to fab up something better later. I'm wanting to keep the step on the small side rather than the full nerf bars.

Where I work the armor plates have "handles" on them... 3/4" wire rope, with a sleeve in the middle and crimped lugs on the ends. These are bolted to each piece of armor. These are often damaged and get replaced as we rebuild these vehicles. I've often thought of grabbing a few of these, better ones from the scrap pile, and using them as a step. They'd be stout enough to hold anyone, but flexible enough they'd deform rather than get snagged on an obstacle such as a rock. Since I installed rock rails my wife doesn't have as difficult a time getting in as previous, so I haven't persued them.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. This is a Bradley derivative, an M6 Linebacker... we build these :D
