anyone do a sm465 and 208 swap into a cj5

    hi all, i been thinking of swaping trannys in my m38a1 if it dont cost a fortune.the jeep has a 355 i built for it and runs good i made a adapter so the chevy bellhousing would fit the tranny. i know it is gonna bust and i dont like how it shifts. so my ? is has anyone ever tried the setup out of a chevy pickup. i know i can get it in there its just hooking upa rear drive shaft. it ll be tight. maby i should just get a 7 ,jared

    ANother thing to look at is if the Tcase will physically fit between the frame rails. It gets really narrow in there.

    Check the 208, most of them were a slip yoke output. May have to go a 205 with a fixed yoke. If my 203 fit between the rails, the 205 or 208 should.

    cool i got a 205 but it needs some bearings anyhow you happen to have any pics? carlinville huh i used to show cattle there when i was a kid im from virginia just up the old double nickle from ya. does the slip yoke have to do with the drive shaft angle or what. why cant i use one with the slip thanks,jared

    You are headed down the road of self inflicted difficulty. The SM465 is a great choice....the 203,205, and 208 t-cases is not. Yes you can make them fit but what have you accomplished ? They are all centered rear outputs and your jeep is not, they are all too long, they are all too wide.

    The model 18 is a great T-case and the others have no advantages over the 18. The novak 1" adapter is not cheap but worth every cent to the completed drive train........ 355/sm465/18tc.

    That is my opinion and worth what you paid for it.

    yea i know there not the best but i dont wanna drop 500 for adapter i dont need but thanks for theword,jared

    say will the 18 spline up to the 465 if so ill machince my own spacer ?

    no, the 1" novak for $500 comes with a new mainshaft for the tranny.
