    Ok

I installed my petronix and coil. The darn thing wouldn't start. I removed the adjustment bolt from the distributor and adjusted the distributor until it sounded like it was about to catch, which was full clockwise. So not being able to adjust the distributor further I moved the distro. wires clockwise one hole. This allowed me to start the JEEP and have it running well. However, the adjustment screw was now past the bracket on the top side (no way to fine tune and secure). I tried adjusting the plug wires around the same way, but I could only get it to start that one way.

Any suggestions. I searched and found many threads about :v6: and markings on the magnets being mismarked. Nothing on the f-Head.

Was the magnetic ring "tight" to put on and how close should it be to the ignitor/sensor thingamajig?

There are two ways the plate could go on. Does it matter which way? I put mine so the sensor was almost directly next to the hole to run the wires out to the coil.

Also, prior to this. My timing (with points) was "well" BTDC. About 3-4 times the width of the 5 degree mark. I previously adjusted it with a vacuum gauge and happened to check where timing was for my refernece. Could the PO have installed my distro incorrectly and I am off.

Anyway, I'll wait and see wait y'all say.

I can't help with the Pertronix, but the oil pump is probably off. The distributor can't be installed incorrectly, but the oil pump can, it drives the distributor.

You mentioned that there were 2 ways you could mount the plate. Did you
try the other way?? I seem to remember someone mentioning that theirs
was 180* off. Maybe that's what you ought to try. I believe in the instructions it say how far the magnet needs to be from the pickup. But I
believe on this setup it's not adjustable. I might be wrong. Someone else
    will chime in.

So, I should remove and re-install the pump ocan I just loosen and adjust it? I guess I need to research this task.

Also, my weight springs are rusted. One spring is "loose" and the other is really stiff. Could that be throwing it off? Where do I get replacement springs for a IAY distrib.

    Thanks

Kevin, got an old cap? Drill out the #1 tower so you can see the rotor inside. After than, what you can do is to find TDC for #1. At that point, the rotor "should" be "under" the #1 terminal on the cap. (5 o'clock IIRC) You can then turn the distributor for the best possible alignment. If there really isn't any, then maybe moving the oil pump a tooth or two over will help. But if it was running good before, then I'd rule everything else out first. HTH

To correct the timing you would have to pull the pump out to enable you to turn the shaft so it'll line up correctly. Doesn't sound like that initially being off is the problem with it not starting though, so you were able to overcome that issue with the points in it.

    Ok

Just got off the phone with Genesee. There should be a small air gap between the magnetic ring and the ignitor. Mine does not. He thinks I may have put the ring on slightly misaligned. I am pretty sure I didn't. They are gonna send me another kit. However, I am gonna try to a remove the ring and reset it. We'll see.

Anyone know where to get some new weight springs? Might as well replace those while I am at it.

Thanks for the help. I like the idea of drilling out the Cap to verify rotor placement.

Any speed shop will have an assortment of distributor springs of varying weights to choose from. They are sheep, so you may want to get a pair of several weights and try them out. With the low-RPM of the F-head, I'd think you'd want all the advance in pretty quick, so lighter, rather than heavier springs are the way to go!

Thanks for the spring tip. I have what amounts to one heavy and one light.
