    Hi,
Just installed the HEI on the V6. Started right up. However, I set the timing at 12* before top dead center in drive with the vac adv plugged. It idles and revs fine, but when I put it in gear and tried to go it just chuggs and chuggs, shakes like all heck ,never gains any rpm then dies, even with the pedal to the floor. Put it in neutral, starts up. Should the timing be 5* before just like the Delco points?

    Josh
PS ran OK before HEI install, plugs at .045

I set mine to 5* BTDC.

    Not 180* out is it?

Oh crap I hope not! I thought of another one. On the "understanding odd fire's" page there is a picture of the inside of the cap. There are even and odd terminals? I just put the cap on and made sure the rotor pointed to something and then added the other wires in order.
Another screw up possibility. I got 0 * on the timing mark and then checked to see if the rotor was pointing at #1 -is this right?

that sounds like what happened when i put my HEI on. i had it on the wrong point. rotate it to the correct point, set for 5* then check it, i bet it runs. mine backfired and stuff REAL loud when i tried it the first time.

Even if it's 180* out it's not a big deal. It'll still run.

I'm guessing your timing is just off. When I dropped my distributor in on Saturday I had it too retarded. The left side was backfiring. Had to move the distributor around to get the cap positioned so I could advance it more. Once I did that it purred like a kitten at 5* before.

Even wires were on the odd terminals and vice-versa. Set timing to 5* before. Works great!

    Thanks Guys
