I'm in the process of replacing the seal and gasket on my transfer case front cap. The service manual shows an oil seal gasket, oil seal and felt seal on the output shaft.

The gasket and seal kit I have does not have the oil seal gasket and there was not one present when I took the old oil seal out. Is this an oversight? Do I need the gasket? If so, can I make one from gasket paper or use something like Permatex Ultra Black?:?

I don't have one in mine, just put a small amount of Permatex on the inside surface so that it seals agains the metal body of the shaft seal. This is actually a hold over from years ealier. Some kits, don't ask me why don't come with them anymore. If you have it use it but its not necessary if use use sealer on the surface.

TNX - I used some permatex and we'll see what happens.

Still can't get the flange off the rear output shaft to get to the seal and gasket behind the parking brake drum. I'm off this week so I guess I'll find a machine shop tomorrow and see what they can do.

usually a good hit with a hammer on the end of the puller is good. You can tighten the puller up tight and hit it on the bolt of the puller and the shock of the hit will get it started.
