I am about to mount a '70s series jerry can carrier (nylon strap) to a '50s M38A1. The hole configurations are different, and the spacer pack is different, but my principle concern is stress to the body if I were to carry a full can of gas. Is there supposed to be wood inserts in the rear tub interior hat channel? Or does that design handle the weight?

I think they originally mounted to the tailgate, and it was reinforced to handle the weight.

My M38A1 has additional supports (small hat channel) on the rear where a tail gate would normally be on a CJ5.

You can probably delete this thread.

Upon further examination, the hat channel welded to the interior rear tub has its own metal reinforcements, probably spot welded in there before assembly.

I should have worn my glasses the first time.

    Thanks.
