Just assembling the rebuilt Tcase D18 to the tranny T14, there is bearing at the back of the tranny that seats between the tcase and tranny. This bearing has a snap ring on it and it is not allowing the the two to seat up on the gasket. Holds them open about the width of the snap ring. Can the snap ring be removed, the two do seat up on the gasket without it?

If the ring is needed I will need to remove some metal from either the Tcase or tranny, which one?

    Thanks

Could it be that the snap ring is a temporary thing done by the rebuilder just to hold the bearing in place until assembly? Someone here knows. Nickmil, where are you?

I have my trans and xfer split right now and unless I'm missing something - there is no snap ring at the bearing.

I was thinking the same thing, the bearing is trapped between the two cases. Where could it go.
The bearing in question is #5 in the attachment, you can see the snap ring directly in behind the bearing.

Are you sure it's the correct bearing? I assume you have the input shaft in with a snapring on that bearing? Do you have the old bearing to compare with?

Could it be that the diagram is of a 2wd application that has a bearing retainer instead of the T case to hold it in.

I can't remember, its been so long since I rebuilt mine. But if that snap ring came out of the assembly it goes back in. The bearing retainer in the pictures looks right.

The old and new bearing are the same.
This is a new mating of the T14 to a small hole D18 that was mating to T90.
I emailed Herm on this as well, the parts kits used in rebuild are his. Hopefully he can shine some light on this. I'll post his reply when I get it.

    Thanks a bunch.

Here are the results, no snap ring required. The bearing is seated into the adaptor in the tranny and then slides into the bearing retaining bore in the T-case. There is only about 0.002 difference between the bearing thickness and the total distance between the tranny and T-case, (depth mic measured of course). The bearing can not move forward or back as it is trapped.
    russo had it nailed!

Thanks for the help and suggestions, it always helps to talk to someone when you run into trouble. Tried my wife but she just don't get it.

Yea the t14 was never mated to the small hole case so you were using a totally different bearing retainer than a stock t14 set up uses.
