So I have been trying to figure out why the 225 just didn't seem to have the power I expected - then it hit me.

The timing cover on the engine is off of a Buick 350/231 not a 225. I have one of each sitting on stands lookin at me the whole time. Doing some measuring it looks like the 0* mark is 7/8" different or what looks like 15* retarded? - Higher on the crank with the 350/231 timing cover.

Anybody else know about this and confirm that I am not 'thinking wrong' again?

I thought someone else here had used a 231 cover on a 225. A 350 should be the same I'd think, the crank wasn't split yet. If it was for an EF 231 is that the difference?

Although OF and EF cylinder intake/exhaust "events" are timed differently, 360* is 360* on #1 TDC I would think.

    Even:
    60-60-60-60-60-60
    1 6 5 4 3 2
    vs
    Odd:
    90-150-90-150-90-150
    1 6 5 4 3 2

Interesting to ponder this. I keep thinking in my mind how my L-head timing is off by 15* due to the oil pump being off a tooth or so. We found this out by accident when we tuned it by vaccum.

Bui-ha's can't be off.... can they?

Finding TDC on the compression stroke will confirm whether you're right ot not. Makes sense though if the timing's retarded on your power issue.

I was told by a friend you can do a rough estimate of TDC using a dowel and putting it through the spark plug hole. Make sure you don't have too much slack in the timing chain. Then mark your 0 at TDC on the cover. After that you can place timing marks on the harmonic balancer inorder to determine amount of advance.

Thanks - Ya Sparky, it's the same as the 231's I have. Going to work on finding TDC, but the weather moved in and it's -8 with wind chill. My guess puts the 0* behind the bolt that mount the timing marks on the cover.

Michigan - it is 360* but the point in rotation where that starts and ends is what I am trying to figure out.

I'll get some pics and post them, if for nothing other than a sanity check (mine is always in question).

Or just pull the valve cover off and watch for the intake valve to close. That's what I did.
