:? Do all jeeps have four wheel drive, also is it always pulling all four wheels or do you put it into 4 wheel drive. My Jeep is a 1970 CJ-5. Thanks for any info.

    There were 2WD universals - "DJ's":

You have to shift into 4WD - you should have a single lever that has positions for 2HI, 4HI and 4Lo (I don't know what they are, have always had twin-sticks here).

Feel free to ask any questions you have here, we were all new to jeeps at one time or another. Lots of us old timers can provide a bunch of "jeep knowledge when asked! Welcome to ECJ5.

and just because it's in 4 wheel drive doesn't mean all 4 wheels are powered. You need limited slip differentials for that. But that brings driveablity issues w/ it.

Doesn't driving it in 4WD all the time esp on dry pavement destroy it?

Driving in 4WD *on* dry pavement will result in drivetrain bind (DAHIK).

Drive in 4WD on gravel/dirt to your hearts extent. 'Swhat it's made for.

Also you might have locking hubs that need to be manually locked or unlocked. With them unlocked the front wheels just spin on the axles either in 4 Wheel drive or 2 wheel.
You might want to check the front hubs and tell us what you have.

 What wrong I put transfer into 4 wheel low and lock the front hubs put jack and raise front end and wheels turn, front drive shaft dosen't turn but wheels do. Hope this isn't a silly question.
