Does anyone know what the carb number would be to give to the Napa guy so I could get a rebuilt carb? 1974 258 3 spd non-California. The one on there has no tag so I assume it is a rebuild. The number cast into the base is 7001, not sure if that is correct or not. The throttle body leaks gas. It's comming from the accelerator so maybe a throttle bearing?? Is this fixable or is remaned the way to go? Thanks.

The Napa Online catalog is a good resource. From there, it seems that 7001 is a good number.

Tip: on that site, if the selection doesn't make sense, pick "Don't Know".

Regarding the leaking, there's not supposed to be liquid gas in the vicinity of the throttle shaft. Typically if the throttle shaft is worn, it will leak air inward, not gas outward. IMO your leak is coming from somewhere else, or else you're pouring gas down the carb (wouldn't run). Use the wiggle test to check the throttle shaft. You're supposed to be able to spray carb cleaner or starting fluid on the base or around the throttle shaft ends while the engine is running to check for leaks, but I have not done it. If you try this, be careful and start with a very small amount.

Another tip: When buying a rebuilt carb, always keep the old carburetor until you are finished and you've been driving the car for a while.

So you think the carb leak is coming from somewhere else. Maybe I will throw another set of gaskets on it. This carb was on it when I got it. The PO not only did not save the tag he also gave them the carb with the throttle bracket adapter still attached. That has been a major PIA for my cause. A friend was able to fabricate one for me. Which actually brings another question. When the gas is floored and I go under the hood I gan move the throttle arm open another 1/2 inch or so. Is this normal? I am guessing not. Do accel cables stretch?

Somebody else here had a problem with the seal around the accelerator pump shaft being missing from carburetor kits. Gas would slosh out of the bowl around the shaft. I would then drip down the inside of the carb body, and you might mistake it for leaking around the body of the carb. IIRC they went to "The Carburetor Shop" or somplace like that online before they found someone that knew what they were referring to.

The throttle plate should open all the way. The cables do fray, but probably not stretch much. I'd guess you've got the dimensions wrong on your homemade bracket, and you need to shorten the lever arm somewhere.
