I put a new fuel filter on my jeep about 100 miles ago and the other day the thing would idle fine but would barely drive under load. So I looked at my fuel filter and the filter looked like the bottom of a river. I think this Jeep was restored about 15 years ago, but has been used very little in the last 10 - 15 years. The gas may have sat in the tank for a long time. I looked at the tank from the outside and it looked in fairly good condition (from the outside). Question is do we think this may clear up after a couple more fuel filters or am I going to be replacing a tank?

I think I'd replace the tank.

You might be able to just clean the tank out too before replacing it. If it's rusty though I'd probably just replace it.

I played this game for 8 years...:D My Jeep had sat for 10 years. At first, the fuel filter would last a couple weeks before it clogged up. Eventually, it lasted longer, but I went through a couple fuel pumps, and rebuilt the carb about 4 times in those years to remove the rust from the float bowl.....
Replace the tank, and save yourself a bunch of trouble...

Thats what I figured I would have to do. Talk about a PIA job. I have only done a tank in an intermediate once, and the body was off so it was easy. Will I have to jack the body up at all to remove the tank? Anyone have any tips or tricks to make this as painless as possible?

boyink has done a couple of them. He has some photos as well. Try a search, you should find it pretty quick.

If you have the skid plate, you can use a poly tank in place of the steel tank. The steel tank is held in place with brackets, but the poly tank uses the skid plate for support. IIRC the skid is easy to remove, as is the tank if it's empty. Again IIRC, '72 has an annoying bunch of little hoses, but the '73-75 are simpler.
