I've done balljoints three times before on vehicles. I've never seen exactly whats on my jeep though. Instead of an upper and lower joint, its just one huge ball. Questions are, it this the ball joint system? If so, what keeps the wheels from kicking out? is there a flat spot on the top of that massive ball? And finally, and most importantly, how do I grease those puppies? I couldn't find any grease nipples. After looking at a book, it appears that I might have to pull my whole hub off to grease? Any good links guys so I can learn about the basics of these axles, and mainly the ball joints?

There aren't ball joints per se on the Dana 25/27 axle, but rather kingpins and bearings with replaceable cups for the bearings to ride in. The bearings and the axle joints are lubed by 140-wt gear oil inside the "ball" part of the axle housing. Some folks prefer a mix of 90-wt gear oil and axle grease, to form a "knuckle-pudding" compound that is less likely to leak than the 140-wt oil. 6 one way, half-dozen the other. I prefer to stick with the recommendations in the manual where possible.

I would stongly suggest that you spend the $$ to get a factory service manual (FSM) for your Jeep, they are invaluable when tackling projects lik e this. Sometimes a picture can truly be worth a thousand words....

****, so thats what FSD means huh, lol. I've been trying to find one, I thought FSD was a brand like chilton and haynes. So its the original manual huh. How do I grease my "ball"? Take of the cup? and better yet, how do I tell if i need to grease it?

It's a very good bet that the king pin bearings and axle u-joints inside there will need replacing. This can help a lot in regards to steering problems. Before getting all gung-ho about taking it apart, do the simple checks outlined in the FSM to see if your's passes muster.

Before long, you're gonna know this Jeep inside and out!

    BTW, didja get her running?

There's two versions of the FSM out there, if you have a '57 you would probably be better of with the earlier version, has a beige cover & a picture of a jeep on it.

Maybe someday, if you're good & eat all your Cherrios, your FSM will reach this Exalted status-

Looks real familiar! I finally had to punch holes in mine and put it in a binder to keep the pages together.

:iagree: Krage is helpful. I tore mine down first to see what I needed, so the project took a week. If all of the parts were sitting there, it will take about a couple of hours per side. Ofcourse, I did calculate in a couple of beer breaks ;)
