Hey all...new to the forum and relatively new to the jeep I inherited.
    Its a 1974 intermediate with the 258.
Its been used by my father-in-law as a plow jeep for the past hell-of-a-long time. Needless to say, it has the plow frame welded to it, but the plow itself is removable. Its got the soft top and doors. I'm not sure how many people owned it prior to him, but my wife learned to drive in it, so he had since at least 1991. It appears that several versions of tops and doors have been on it, based on the number of holes in the door frame.
I'll ask questions about that later, but my first question is about the body mounts:

I noticed that several of the body mounts and the bushings are a bit rusty, with some cracking along the frame between the mounts. What is the best solution? Should I just take it to a local welder and have the mount strengthened or should I have new mounts welded on? The frame itself is in really good shape, and since I drive it a bit recreationally now that its in my possession, I want the body to be nice and secure.

Thanks all in advance for the advice and help!
    :)

Can you show us some pics of the cracks?
We can advise you much better if we can see the problem.
Are the cracks in the frame, or the mount?

    Welcome aboard!! :)

I'll try to take some today...
Its the mounts, not the frame....
They seem to be separating along the original weld that holds them up against the frame....
    Thanks for the welcome!
    :)

Welcome from another Colorado member! It is my opinion if you own an intermediate you need to have your own welder or a friend with a welder. What part of Colorado are you in?

    I'm up in Conifer....
Yeah...I need to find a good welder up here...any recommendations? =)
I also have battery issues with the battery always running down when I use the plow...never used to do that...probably a bad alternator or stator...
What lift kit did you use?
And I'm looking to put in power steering...how'd you go about doing that?

Welcome from Golden. There was a fellow I worked with at Coors who lives (lived?) on Ohlman Park Road in Conifer. He was a heck of a good welder at the brewery. I havent been in touch with him for several years but his name is Hank Burkhalter. The last phone no. I have for him is (303) 234-6245. If he's still welding, he'll do you a darn good job for a reasonable price.

The only good welders I know are my husband and my brother. If you want to bring it down to Colorado Springs they might be able to help. I now have a high output chevy alternator on mine. If we need to use the winch the original one wouldn't be able to keep up. The ARB compressor sucked the life out of it.
I have a Pro Comp lift on mine. It was cheap but you get what you pay for. It doesn't work as well as I need it to so I'm going to be converting to 2 1/2" springs. I hear there is now a Soft Ride for early cj's. That would be the way I would go if I was staying with 2" springs.
For the power steering we bought a 1977 j10 donor truck and took everything off of it. Used a steering column out of a chevy 3/4 ton. When you are ready to do this let me know and we can give you a hand. PM me and I'll get you my number.:)
