    Chevy Hei distributor? pics!

I was given a hei distributor, I am hoping it is from a inline six so i can swap it on to the jeep. I think it is the six cylinder because it has six points on the pickup and it looks like the ones on the swap articles. Is there any way to be sure? Thanks.

There should be a part number cast into the body of the distributor that you can track down through the friendly Chevy parts guy. It's been a long time since I built a Chevy so I'd hate to give you the wrong info off the top of my head.

Ok called a dealership and they said it is off a late 70's I-6 truck, so its the right one. If i install this what kind of improvment should i expect.

You need a different gear, otherwise a drop in. IIRC you can use an AMC V8 gear.

the hei you've got is a drop-in for the 258. if you've still got your old 258 distributor gear, you just need to grind off the collar (bottom) to allow the thing to sit properly on the new hei.

if you want, you can come down to my place and look at mine. bring the 258 dist. gear with you, and i'll grind it, too.

    pm if you want.

I got a gear off of a GW 360 at the pick-your-part. Still sitting on my shelf though.

Here's some info established long ago by Larry Maggio.
    http://www.geocities.com/jeeperaz/hei.htm

He's added the "no email" disclaimer at the top since the last time I looked at this... looks like his memory is getting as bad as mine!! :D
Anyway, there is some good info here, part numbers, etc.

Not to highjack this thread, but will this work on my 74 232? I have the HEI and was getting ready to swap it over when I thought, I better double check this first.........

Yes. Only the stroke is different between the 258 and 232.

<edit> The crank and rods will be different. Same pistons AFAIK.
