 I'd think that bears a little investigating! Maybe it has a different t/case, or a broken/missing shifter?

hmm....its a 3 spd. transmission so I figured it was a t-14, and yea, the t-case only has one lever, up or down

Makes sense to me. Swap the drivetrain out of a :v6: model into the '57, that would include a single stick transfer case.

I'm wondering if it's very useful to consider your Jeep as a "57".

Is anything besides the body that vintage? Maybe it's only the tub that got swapped.

From what I can see the split windshield would've been swapped too. What are the chances an older tub and WS were better than one about 10 years newer? Possible I guess. Not likely IMO.

What do the engine mounts look like? Original factory or replaced from the original f-head?

No, the engine mounts are definitly makeshift for the V-6, not factory. Actually, the frame is a 59' the guy told me. And tho the welds on the engine mounts are strong and havn't cracked in 25 years, they are very sloppy with blobs of weld everywhere definitly not factory, I will get some pics up later today. The guy told me that the winshield is original, which was one of the highlights that he emphasized. He could have been wrong tho, considering the title he gave me shows that he purchased the jeep in the early 70's.

    Sparky,

I guess I'm wondering if somebody had a road-salt rustbucket and found a solid military surplus body. Did we ever resolve if he has a M38A1? That looks like a military WS.

Strider, do you have a hole in the passenger side of the Jeep on the cowl and does the battery box cover have some screws on it so you can remove it?

WS looks like a standard split WS that was optional in '57 to me so I didn't think about it too much.

Did some research. I definitly have a 57 M38A1 second generation. I know it is a second edition due to the rods going from the firewall to the radiator and due to my jeep not having the hinged flip down grill that the first edition M38A1's had. The split windshield is original to this jeep. I believe the frame was the only thing swapped out which came from a 59 CJ-5. And obviously, the V6 has been swapped and apparently the transfer case????since it only has one lever.

Who put shackles on the front of an A1 frame then?

You SURE it's an A1? I'm still skeptical having not seen the APU or removable battery box cover...

I did notice that the M38A1 that I was looking at had a reversed shackles, but I thought that was after market. I would assume that my shackles arn't reversed cause my frame is from a CJ5. What is the APU?

Oh, you're right, I thought of that just now as well. CJ-5 frame wouldn't have it.

APU = that big hole on the passenger side cowl I posted above along with the removeable battery box cover.

Gauges in the dash, one big one or several? Glove box on the driver's side or passenger side?

Yea, I got the hole next to the pass. seat. the guy gave me two gas tanks too. and I got the cowl. I believe it has screws on the cowl side of the hinge and rivets on the body side, but i may be backwards. 1 glove box to the left of the drivers seat. Gauges are several in one big rectangular unit.

I'm very excited about the body that I have. Its in great shape. I just wish the engine would have started up by now  I noticed the mounts on the back of my body, that noone else has. They are the mounts for hardware to put one of the canvas tops on, but I felt extra cool when I oringinally thought they were mortar mounts or something, lol.
