Here's my problem; I friend of mine that doesn't know "jack" about jeeps bought a '74 CJ5 per his title, after seeing his pics, it's not a '74, I'm thinking a '76 or later. When you look at the second pic is the VIN plate under the wiring connector on the drivers side? He lives in Tx and I'm here in Ga, anyway I want him to double check the VIN # on the jeep to make sure he can get this straightened out pronto.

the Jeep pictured is not a 74
the VIN should be in the area you described, under the bulkhead connector
    74 would start J4....
    76 would start J6....
    good luck

I've got two like that, one has a bunch of '76 + stuff swapped on, the other has a bunch of '71- stuff swapped on. I went by the VIN tag on both. Mine have the VIN tag under the master cylinder.

Judging by the steering column and the rollbar, it looks like post 75. The easiest way to tell is to look at the frame rails. If they widen outboard at the rear of the vehicle, the frame is post 75, otherwise it's 72-75.

The only thing that matters at the end of the day (or that would matter here in MA) is that the VIN matches the [clean] title. Who cares what year is listed.

Also, the spring hangers, cross-member and body floor are '76 or later, so it's clearly not a '74 chassis. Windshield too, but those are fairly easy to change.
