A few months ago I bought a 1955 CJ5. I'm new to the game and still learing a lot. Im trying to figure out what front axel I have. I have no idea if it is original or not. I would assume it is a Dana 25 or 27. It is closed knuckle and the casting number of the pumpkin is 17038. I was unable to find this casting number or the web, dose anyone know? How else can I identify what I have? Thanks.

Should have 25 or 27 cast into the webbing around the differential.

'55 would've had a 25 stock. Otherwise it doesn't really matter unless you have problems with the gears that I can think of.

Did you look through these pics?

    BTW, welcome from KS!

This shows the model # cast into the "webbing" along the differential. Another location to look for the model # is also in the webbing but behind the axle tube; the webbing that angles back toward the pinion. This location is parallel to the ground so it often collects alot of dirt making it hard to see without a thorough cleaning.

    Welcome aboard!!

One of my axles has 27A cast on the top of the housing and the web. The other is a 25 and has the number cast in the web.

Quick ID ***-U-Me-ing everything is stock- 25 has the vent on the diff cover, 27 has the vent on top of the pumpkin. Otherwise the model ID is cast on the upper back driver's side of the pumpkin

My 27 had the vent in the diff cover when I got it, but that doesn't mean someone didn't put a 25 cover on it...
