Ah, the sweet sound of a running engine, ah the sweet smell of oil, and gas...

Those of you who don't / can't ride their jeep all year long know the feeling. My jeep was stuck in an icy driveway, two month without running, and I felt it was the time to give it a ride around the block.

So Wednesday night I poured gas into the carb, also in the tank, putted back the battery in its place, and I waited 'till yesterday. I came from work, plugged the jeep (I have a block heater), and inside I was, putting some warm clothing.

It started at the first turn of the key !!! I was so happy I think iIyelled, à la frankenstein, ``IT'S ALIVE, IT'S ALIVE !!!```

I took the jeep for a short ride around the block, When I came back in my driveway, I got out to check my rear flat tire (something more to fix), and it stalled. The idle is somewhat eratic. So i started it so I could park it, and there was this loud BANG. coming from the exaust. It was a he%&... of a backfire. I guess the exaust pipe became loose, there was a new sound after that coming from there...

So what do you think is the cause of this sort of behavior ???

    Can it be fixed ???

    Thanks for listening

p.s. i was asking earlier if I could modify a yj top for my cj-5, but not a top on earth will fit the first time. I looked at my tub yesterday and it is homemade, so I'm afraid that if I want a top, I'll have to make it fit anyway

The back fire could have been caused by a sticking valve or lifter. Or it could have been a electical issue. I would lean towards the valve since it only happend once. The force of the blast probably caused some trauma to your older exhaust system causing a leak and ta dah a new noise.

Might have been excess fuel in the muffler too.
