I got my 75 with a new gas tank and the skid plate laying in the tub and the original tank removed. I'm trying to install the tank and things aren't quite adding up. I have the bent bracket that attaches to the front of the tank, and it's obvious how the skid installs, but what is going on with the rear corners? I have a couple rubber spacers that look like they fit in that location, but the tank won't fit up against the frame due to a wide flange at the tank seam. Do I just need to trim the flange to make things right or am I missing something? Also, the front bracket almost seems to be keeping the tank from sliding fully into position. Is this common with aftermarket tanks? I just want to make sure I'm not installing something wrong.

    BTW, it's a steel tank.

Seems like Alan (Hippo) had the same issue with a metal tank as well. Might try searching the ECJ5 section.

FWIW, poly tanks have no seams, thus no issue with the frame.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but would you mind posting some pics when you're done? I'm going to be putting my original tank back in place, but the PO didn't have it in correctly to begin with. I need to see how the brackets and support is done. Thanks.

    Jim,

Thank you! Perfect timing. We are trying to locate a skid plate (missing) for our '73 so we can mount our new metal tank (painted a very shocking color I might add  ). I'm hoping we don't need to make any mods.

We still need a filler hose kit. What size is that hose in this great diagram and is there a part number for an inclusive kit? All we have right now is the tank.

    Thanks!

    Beth

    Beth, I'm guessing the diameter at 2 1/2 - 3"
measuring the tank neck would be more accurate than my guess
no kit for CJ models, all individual parts
the problem is the vent hose nipple, 3/4" diam maybe?
vent hose attaches to this nipple which bolts thru the opening in the filler hose
waggies and pickup used simliar set-ups as well for that era
anyway, that nipple is no longer made
finding a good used one from a donor seems to be the only way to get one: waggy, CJ or pickup

Jim, thanks. In looking at the picture, it appears there is rubber grommets (4152) that are actually mounted on top, rather than below where the tank contacts the support bracket. Is that right?

Thanks to the PO, my tank was held up by two straps with the tank resting on top of them and a piece of rubber sandwiched in between.

I don't even know if I have all the right pieces. Sorry again. I guess I need to start a new thread?

I had to grind my tank flange down to the the welded seams to make it fit in the frame rails.

Hi guys - I'd suggest you have the local muffler shop bend a pipe to mimic the bends in the OEM hose. On the Wagons and J-trucks, these parts are scarce and that's the usual approach to replacement. Then use short, straight lengths of fuel filler hose to join each end. You may instead be able to make the bends from elbows and striaght pipe in copper with the help of your local plumbing supply.

On my rig, there is no room for brackets between the tank and the frame when the skid is installed (unless the PO left them in there, I'll have to look again.) So, sounds like trim until the tank fits up between the rails, easy enough.

As for fill and vent hoses, MTS sells both, about $33 for the pair plus shipping. The fill hose is exact, the vent hose appears to be the 76+ version. It will work with trimming, it just isn't a perfect fit.

    That thread answered the question.

FWIW, since the question comes up in that thread, the seam around the tank is a weld. You can cut up to that weld without worrying about leaks, but don't cut into the weld itself.

Looks like I'll get my tank installed tonight :driving:
