I have a 73 cj5, The steering wheel is too close to me (I'm a big guy) and I want to cut it. I removed the steering shaft from the tube. If I cut the shaft I will loose the splins and the shaft sounds hollow. I want to remove about 4 inches.

I shorten mine I think I cut 5" out it so much nicer I just cut it and took a piece out and weld it back together then shorten the tube.

Can this be done with an older column, like my '56? Or one from a V6 Ross setup?

Just be careful that you don't shorten it too much, and then have knee-clearance issues. I know flatfenders don't have nearly the interior space of newer Jeeps, but I ended up having to RAISE my steerign wheel a couple of inches and ADDING to the steering shaft to be able to brake safely. Measure twice, cut once! ;)
