I am trying to find out what month my Jeep was built. Unfortunately when we did the restoration the VIN sticker was lost off of the dash. I am going to have a new VIN sticker made. She is a 1974 with the Sequential Production Numbers (the last 5 digits): 09523

Can you guys take a look at your VIN stickers and see where my Jeep falls into production??

OH, where on your dash is the sticker located?? A few pics would be great!!

    Thank you very much...

You should also have build dates on your engine valve cover (V-8). Build dates are also stamped on your axles and radiator, if radiator is original. You will then get somewhat closer to actual build date or at least know it was not built before your latest stamped build date.

I appreciate the information but unfortunately when I took the Jeep apart restoration was not the goal. The tags on the valve covers and axles are gone (Not too happy about that) and the radiator was replaced. If anyone has pictures of either of these I would like to reproduce these as well.

    Thank you

Our 1974 CJ was built in November 1973 with sequential number 25175.
The VIN Decal says Built by Jeep Corporation, is 1.8" tall, 4.5" wide, centered under the headlight switch,. The bottom of the label is 1.3" above the bottom of the dash. Your CJ must be earlier than Nov 73.

The axle build dates are not on tags. They are stamped right on the axle tube. On rear axle looking from the rear the number should be approx 2 in to the right of pumpkin. You may have to sand a bit to see them. The front axle is (standing in front, looking rearward) approx 5 inches to the right of carrier housing. They are somewhat small number stampings.

If it's close enough, you can guesstimate the build date from the production figures. The serial numbers are assigned sequentially. Figure Jeep produced about 1/4 of the run (3 months worth) to fill the dealer's showrooms in September, so those would have an August-September build date. The following July they'd be tooling up for the next model year, so little or no production that month. The remaining 3/4 would be spread out over the next 9 months or so.

Tim, really good advice but I was hoping to nail it to the month. If anyone else out there with a 1974 can chime in with their sequecntial production number and month of manufacture it would help.

    Thanx

<edit> OOOPS! No Commando in '74. You get the picture though. Decrease all the numbers by 10%.

Tim, you may be on to something here. My production number is 9523 and I think it I remember it being Sept 1973 that was on the old VIN sticker on my dash....
