Dualmatic overdrive problems

Went out last week and was on a highway for about 2 miles and shifted into overdrive. When I went to get off the over drive wouldn't shift out. It was like it was in neutral. Drove home in overdrive. I have played with it and can't seem to find the problem. Any thoughts?

I had this problem but it was after installing a new synchro ring that I found had broke. Herm told me to sand the inside of the ring with emery paper to increase clearance. I did and have not had problems since. You didn't mention a rebuild but your ring may have a problem causing it to bind up when your trying to downshift.

 

so the lever moved, but it wouldn't shift?
if the overdrive would have gone into neutral, the Jeep wouldn't have moved.
Have you checked the shift linkage to make sure it's not hitting/rubbing anywhere ?

guessing synchro problem if nothing else obvious

 

The overdrive has not been rebuilt. Last night I went to move it from the garage and it came out of overdrive. On Saturday I took to trans cover off and looked around and couldn't find any binding. This weekend I'll play around again. It wouldn't shift out of overdrive even if I was stopped so I doubt this is a synchro problem.

 

In my case, once I shifted into overdrive it I wasn't able to downshift the od unit 'til I pulled it off (only nuetral).

 

Did you rebuild your overdrive? How expensive are parts? How difficult is it to work on the OD?
